The iPod and the Gramophone

Post by sosumi »

Back in 2006, I wrote an article that compared the marketing tactics of the iPod with the gramophone. I only wish I had the resources of this forum to provide input on the article. But as its almost always better to be late then never, any suggestions or comments are welcome.

It's mind boggling that we are still being amazed by machines simulating the human voice.

Great article. I really like how you pointed out the similarities, but I absolutely love the "Victrola in surgery". Would you be willing to share this page here on the forum in better resolution? It's very hard to see in the small picture.
Thanks
Andreas

Amazing parallels again to today, just think about birth rooms with soothing colors and again - music.
Thanks

Made me think of a story by S.J. Perelman, based on a similar (but later) news item.... "Swing Out, Sweet Opiate"....

He carried the theme to its reductio ad absurdum...

(Story's archived on the New Yorker website - but you have to sign in to read it....)

Reminds me of something I heard, recently: that surgeons don't LIKE noise, because it causes the pupils to dilate and that causes their vision to be less clear!

I wonder how germ-free one can make a Victrola & records ...
