Here's a DD I got a while ago, for comparison: I was surprised at the quality, given that it's from a period that many collectors shun…celticguitar666 wrote:Cody, do you find as I am finding the 78's sound better less surface noise than the DD at least by my limited exposure I am finding it more so

I have one or two dd out of the 15 I Have that sound that good but I am talking about pulling 78's out of one my books relatively as is uncleaned yet consistently having little surface noise one after another my luck or the nature of the beast? not sure but a lot of my 78's in my collection sound like this good 9/10 of them or better 10/10 and that is playing them with a medium steel needle not a diamond maybe as I get more DD my opinion will change. I try to be fussy with my 78 picking looking for ones still in sleeves or books and avoid the milk crate lumps I have yet to find a DD in a thrift store.Lucius1958 wrote:Here's a DD I got a while ago, for comparison: I was surprised at the quality, given that it's from a period that many collectors shun…celticguitar666 wrote:Cody, do you find as I am finding the 78's sound better less surface noise than the DD at least by my limited exposure I am finding it more so

Old Man E knew what he was doing sometimes, and sometimes he was a shyster. Those late war DD's are despicable.De Soto Frank wrote:Etched (black) "label" Diamond Discs are notorious for surface noise.
The paper-label DD's are supposedly quieter.
My limited experience with the paper-label variety supports this theory... the majority of my DD library are black/etched label.
It is my opinion that the average acoustic Victor record has MUCH less surface noise than a black/etched label DD.
