No. It's not the whole governor that's wrong. If the correct Victor parts were mounted on your correct Victor governor shaft, there would be a place for the third weight, (two of which you now have).

The circled parts are the only ones that are wrong.

Right you are, I thought that screw was a set screw to attach that bottom collar but of course that collar has to be able to drift up the shaft.
Thank you, that really helps direct me in the right direction.
That screw is a set screw. The whole collar is wrong. The correct collar has a set screw and 3 mounting places for governor springs. No, the collar is not meant to drift up the shaft. It's supposed to be fixed. Read what I wrote above, the circled parts are the ones that are wrong. As in, they do not belong on a Victor governor.

Ah, the top friction plate is what moves over the shaft then? Makes sense. I may have to find a whole governor, I found the friction plate on Phonograph Shop but not the bottom collar...

The whole set of springs, weights, plate and collar slide off the axis if you simply release the set screw.
Probably the axis is the right one, and you must replace that Columbia springs and collars set for the right Victor set, which is similar but has three springs and balls..

Serial no. 12979 would be a 1903 model, and at the tail end of the concert reproducer…. Just before the exhibition era.

Beautiful machine.

I thought that but the Victor Victrola page says that the first run tags say Type V.3 and then starting 1906 they say Vic III. Though it does also emphasize that the information is not certain.

From: http://www.victor-victrola.com/Victor%20III.htm

- The earliest Victor III models are stamped "Type V.3" and have no suffix letter after the serial number. These were likely made between 1903 and 1905.
- The next sequential group in production were stamped "Type Vic III", and the serial numbers were reset back to "1". These were likely produced between 1906 and 1909, although the exact date range is uncertain. A cabinet upgrade took place around 1906. Machines produced after 1908 were denoted as "Style Vic III".

Good point. I was just going by the Victor data book. My Victor III has a serial number around 20,000, but it has beveled gears and is stamped “M” on the data plate. Does your machine have beveled gears like mine? If so, it has the monarch motor and would be an earlier version.

Thanks again,

John

Someone has definitely been here, and more recently than I would have liked. I wonder what those rubber washers are from…

Those are garden hose gasket washers. Not a horrible solution actually, but not quite right either.

Yes, I believe they are and the little nubs on the side are to keep them in place when they're in the receiver. They don't look all that old.

I just noticed in my picture of the spring barrels that there is an empty hole above the first barrel. I now wonder if the spring isn't broken
but that the inner spring attachment has become dislodged... maybe both are true...
