half barrel cabinet on facebook marketplace

Post by dzavracky »

I was not sure if this should go in the crapophone section or here. BUT this has been up for a LONG time haha and I was interested in it at first. But $1000? It couldn't possibly be worth that much. And then thhat marble top?

My edison home would look really sharp on top of it.... but again that marble top isn't original! Do you think it could be removed and still save the top of the cabinet?

What would be a reasonable offer to make the guy?

That's a full barrel cabinet, not a half. Yup, it's in really poor shape, but nice ones can sell for thousands. I have a friend who paid close to 10K for a really good one, way back when prices were much higher.

Is it even worth making an offer for it?

It’s a 3 hour drive for me

I can't tell for sure what type of wood was used. It almost looks painted to me. Yes, it's worth an offer but it will be an uphill restoration but maybe that's what you live for. :) Those horizontal recesses are meant for shelves that attach to the door and go inside the cabinet when the door is closed. The one inside shelf doesn't look correct. When set up correctly the shelves on the door mate perfectly with the inside shelves with just a bit to spare. So you'd need to rebuild the inside shelves, build a new wood top, replace the feet, and refinish the whole thing. Just the job for you! Done properly it would be the center piece of most anyone's cabinet collection.

If you have the skills, it's worth the drive and an offer. What do others think? Maybe $500?

Yes, it's a full barrel Herzog cabinet and those are the shelved that need to be replicated. Perhaps the top just needs good veneer. That cabinet would be spectacular when restored. I hope your offer is successful. Tell the seller to keep the very valuable stone top. :)

The cylinder holders, (pegs), are just cardboard tubes with end caps glued on. I believe somebody supplies those, they are the least for your worries and if they were never replaced, it still wouldn't be the biggest of deals.

Who knows, the top might be not too bad. Just hope the marble slab isn't glued on!!

The guy has to ask his father, as the father bought it for his wife years ago.

He said he will let me know later today. I also hope the marble slab is just sitting on the top of the cabinet and is not glued on!

Jerry is correct, there is no way to tell from the picture if it is an oak or mahogany cabinet. I believe the Mahogany cabinets to be scarcer of the two. Besides making the shelves, the wire supports, cylinder pegs, you would also have to reproduce the opening mechanism for the doors . That is the harder part of this restoration. I just finished restoring a Mahogany Full Barrel. it was also missing the shelves, wire supports, pegs and opening mech. Luckily I had another full barrel to use as a pattern for all of the pieces. I have reproduced the cardboard pegs exactly as were in all Herzog cabinets, where the black paper is applied over both the cardboard peg and the cap. Time consuming, but very authentic.
